Not for women only: Pilates regimen benefits women and men

Inside Chesapeake Pilates, founder and instructor Stefanie O'Rourke gives instructions in an energetic voice, to say the least.

"Bring your hips over your heels." "Round your ribs up toward the ceiling."

Four men go through various positions. They rotate between their legs or arms being held by harnesses with their resistance dictated by springs.
Pilates is not a new exercise. The concept is over a century old and has been in the United States since the late 1920s when its creator, Joe Pilates, emigrated from Germany to New York City.
In recent years, it has grown out of a small niche in the dance and fitness world and into the mainstream. But it still fights against the stigma that it is an exercise regimen more in line with women, largely because of its emphasis on flexibility.

At the relatively new studio, a 51-year-old employee with Verizon Enterprise who focuses on corporate technical assistance works in tandem with a 69-year-old retiree who regularly performs the accordion in the band "The Best Years."

Gary Hymes, the 51-year-old, has issues with his back related to surgery while Gene Barbato, 18 years his senior, deals with arthritis in his neck and shoulder as well as pain derived from his foray into music.

But they both swear that taking pilates classes with O'Rourke helps to ease that pain while also building a healthier lifestyle.

"The big difference is in the strength of (my) core," Barbato said. "If I'm out at a festival or something playing for three hours, before it would destroy me."

"Now, I can do it," he added. "I use a lot less Aleeve, you know?"

Hymes quips "This is just what I needed" after O'Rourke asks him to tell her if he's experiencing any pain.

As Yardley Cavanaugh, an instructor, put it, "The reason I love pilates (is) ... as we get older, we want to keep doing what we do (regularly). Whether you want to do a triatholon or if you want to swim."

"It helps you become aware of your body."

Origins

When Joseph Pilates brought the exercise over from Germany, a key part was his belief that mental and physical health work in tandem.

Many aspects of the exercises themselves — a heavy emphasis on form over repetition as well as meticulous instructions on breathing — are meant to create a sort of balance, the instructors said.

But while the practice has been in the United States for nearly a century, articles in men's health publications still regularly run headlines like "(Five) Reasons Men Should Do Pilates" and "Why Pilates is a Good Workout for Men."

Kerry De Vivo, the owner of Excel Pilates Annapolis, said as the practice started to gain popularity, "you'd see a lot more women then you did men."

"My studio ... has been trying to help get the word out to the male population that (this) is made for them and it was made by a man," she said.

Even Barbato, now three years into his training at Chesapeake Pilates, admits that when his wife spurred him on to try it for the first time, he was hesitant.

"I said 'Oh my god, this is too hard,'" he said.

While he's gone to physical therapy for his shoulder and neck, he said they don't have the same effect that pilates has.

"The only thing that helped me was physical therapy, but then that was temporary," he said, adding that it helps to keep the muscles in his upper body more loose and able to continue to hold his accordion, a heavy instrument.

"This is like on-going maintenance," Barbato said.

Others talk about how it's helped their golf game or how it's made more routine activities easier to handle, as they feel more in control of their body, a key tenant in the exercise.

A Concentrated Regimen

While Barbato is a bit more advanced, some of the others at the Tuesday class aren't quite up to his level.

O'Rourke gives them the finer tips of spinal flexion and extension.

Looking through the glass windows at her business, the idea can look intimidating. Large benches line the inside with various parts that attach for additional resistance and the like.

For those who are worried they'd be starting from a place of weakness, the instructors understand that not everybody has the physical fitness of a Kobe Bryant, who has been known to use the exercise during training for the basketball season.

"We're very careful to start everyone at the beginning," De Vivo said. "Pilates is like building blocks."

She notes that men are "predisposed to tighter hamstrings" and "we're not going to ask you to stretch or exert effort beyond your level."

And while Barbato and Hymes are working as part of a four-person workout group, instructors can also schedule individual appointments as well.

Parts of O'Rourke's instruction resemble what you might see inside a more conventional gym. As participants lift their legs and position their arms to get into the various positions, she exerts an exuberance as she sees the men perfect their form or perform a particular crunch of their abdominal muscles.

"You don't want to pick them apart too much," she said.

Some of the men admit they were either recruited by their wives or significant others and might not have tried it without them.

But whether it's simply to stay physically fit or so they can continue to play an instrument into their 70s, they all say it's now become part of their regular regimen.
