ELKHART — For 11 years, Lisa Wing worked for a pediatric therapy clinic and managed 30 therapists at multiple locations. “I was so stressed. I started meditating for my own purposes and that led to yoga,” Wing said. “I was feeling unappreciated and under-compensated for all that I was doing. I wanted to do something else and knew I’d like to open my own business but didn’t know for sure what.”
“I was so stressed. I started meditating for my own purposes and that led to yoga,” Wing said. “I was feeling unappreciated and under-compensated for all that I was doing. I wanted to do something else and knew I’d like to open my own business but didn’t know for sure what.”
As the benefits of meditation and yoga began to help Wing, she wanted to share the same results with others and decided to become a yoga teacher. In 2014, she enrolled at Pranayoga School of Yoga and Holistic Health in Fort Wayne.
“My mission is enriching lives by awakening one heart at a time,” Wing said, while sipping a mug of hot tea in her yoga studio, Awakening Realm, which she opened five weeks ago at 624 W. Beardsley Ave., Elkhart.
Wing said she looked at several locations but none of them met the criteria she had set in her mind for a studio — natural light and visibility from the street. Finally, she came across a small strip mall northeast of the intersection of West Beardsley Avenue and North Michigan Street.
“The windows in front were huge and the price was feasible,” she said. “My fiancé and I did a remodel. We put in new laminate flooring, took out some walls, added doors and made the space fit the needs that I envisioned in my head.”
Initially, Wing wanted to take out a fireplace in the yoga room during the remodel and after some discussion, she decided to leave it in. She created a space for a Hindu Buddha that sits on a colorful meditation stool surrounded by colorful squares of red, orange and purple on the exterior of the fireplace. Wing used the creative suggestions from a local artist, Annie Logan, to help create the space. The colors are associated with chakra, one of the classes taught in the studio.
“Chakra is a yoga series that coves the seven major energy centers in your body using yoga positions that focus on each chakra,” she said. “We concentrate on better alignment, stability and flexibility to remove obstacles and free physical flow.”
The owner said the artist also designed the business logo based off a tattoo Wing has on her shoulder that features the flower of life with a sacred geometric pattern consisting of overlapping circles.
“Life is being a good person and living a good, honest life,” she said. “ I want clients to feel good about themselves and their lives.”
Some of the classes offered include life coaching, reiki, yoga, meditation, forgiveness and power of thought workshops.
“Anyone can practice yoga. It doesn’t matter if you can touch your toes, if you are male or female, the weight or height of your body,” Wing said. “Yoga is for anyone and everyone. You start where you are at. If you can only do it in a chair, we will start in a chair if you lack the mobility.”
